The Super 8 is the second phase of the 2026 T20 World Cup, played after the 12-team group stage concludes on 21 June 2026. The top eight teams from the group phase — six group-stage winners, plus two best runners-up — qualify and split into two seeded groups of four: Group A and Group B. Each team carries forward its group-stage record (wins, losses, NRR) against the Super 8 teams it has already played, then plays three new opponents within its seeded group. This format replaces the previous Super 12 structure used from 2021-2024. The ICC confirmed the change in March 2026 to compress the schedule into a 37-day broadcast window and to keep the India-Sri Lanka venue footprint manageable. Net Run Rate (NRR) is the tiebreaker for teams tied on wins; head-to-head result is the primary tiebreaker only when NRR is identical within 0.001.
India are seeded into Group A alongside Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Australia. The four sides played each other in the group stage from 7 June; in the Super 8 those results carry over, and India adds matches against Bangladesh, Afghanistan, England, and the Group B runner-up (probabilistic — South Africa or West Indies). Australia are the chief threat to India in Group A. They swept the 2026 bilateral series 4-1 and have an NRR uplift against associate sides that often inflates their carry-forward into the Super 8. Pakistan are the dark-horse — two of their three likely knockouts come against India and Australia, but their spin attack on Sri Lankan decks has consistently troubled India's middle order in the 2025-26 cycle.
The top two from Group A and Group B qualify directly for the semi-finals, with no quarter-final round. The semi-final pairings are seeded: Group A winner plays Group B runner-up on 8 July at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi; Group B winner plays Group A runner-up on 9 July at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Both semi-finals have a 14 July reserve day, but the window is tight — the final is on 13 July at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad at 7:00 PM IST.
The bracket favours India in one critical respect: if India finish first in Group A, they face the Group B runner-up in the semi-final — likely South Africa or West Indies, both of whom India have favourable head-to-head records against at neutral venues since 2024. If India finish second in Group A, they likely face the Group B winner (most probable: Australia or New Zealand) in the semi-final at Wankhede, where India have won 8 of their last 10 T20Is.
Five India Super 8 matches fall in a single nine-day window from 23 June to 1 July — the densest India fixture cluster of the entire tournament. Fantasy managers on Halaplay should treat the Super 8 as two distinct game-script windows: spin-dominant venues (Delhi, Colombo) favour all-rounders and finger-spinners in the captaincy slot, while batting decks (Bengaluru, Mumbai) reward top-order anchors and death-over quicks. The captaincy differential — picking a non-Rohit captain on a deck where Rohit is favourite — is what separates the top 5% from the top 30%. Book Rohit only on batting decks (Bengaluru, Mumbai); on Delhi and Colombo, the captaincy differential goes to a finger-spinner (Kuldeep Yadav or Axar Patel) where the role is bimodal.
Once the semi-finals begin on 8 July, fantasy scoring on Halaplay shifts to a knockout multiplier — match-winning innings and spell-winning figures both carry a 2x bonus that the round-robin does not. That changes the captaincy weighting significantly: a 30-ball 40 with a wicket in a semi-final scores more than a 50-ball 60 in a dead group-stage match, even at a lower strike rate. Pre-final team building is the third fantasy lever. The 13 July final at Narendra Modi Stadium (Ahmedabad) is a batting deck with a 175+ first-innings average across the 2024-25 IPL and international windows. Wrist-spinners struggle there; finger-spinners (Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel) and pace-bowling all-rounders (Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube) take wickets at a higher clip than their group-stage averages. Build the 13 July roster with a finger-spin captain option if India qualify, and a pace all-rounder option if India are eliminated.
Three knockout-marker matchups shape the bracket. India vs Australia in the Super 8 (carry-forward from the group fixture on 16 June at Wankhede) is the seeding determinant — the winner takes top spot in Group A and the easier semi-final path. India vs South Africa (if scheduled, projected 29 June) is the projected semi-final if India hold form. Australia vs New Zealand in Group B is the seeding race for the opposite semi-final lane.
The format change in 2026 makes the Super 8 mathematically equivalent to a quarter-final — finishing fourth or lower in the seeded group is elimination. There is no second life for teams that stumble in the Super 8 the way there was in the 2024 Super 12. That shifts the captain differential calculus across the late-June window: pick the high-ceiling option in the opening Super 8 matches, not the safe-floor option that worked in the group stage.
